The Cardiff Demons are a recreational Ice Hockey team formed from the
hugely successful Cardiff Devils Play The Game (formerly Learn to Play) scheme.
'Learn to Play' began in 2005 in the WNIR and many of the players went on to form Eddies Eagles (now known as the Cardiff Eagles). By 2006 the numbers had dwindled with many of the original players progressing to playing and training with the Eagles or other recreational teams. 'Learn to Play' was re-established in January 2007 in the newly built Cardiff Bay Arena. The 'LTP' sessions were popular with adults as well as children and soon there were 50 people turning up to the Friday session. These early sessions were coached by Gerad Adams (Coach of the Cardiff Devils) and Tracey Keeble (a qualified hockey coach). Devils players including Dion Darling, Mark Smith and Max Birbraer also helped out.
When Brent Pope joined the Cardiff Devils organisation he took over the running and coaching of LTP, assisted by Devils players including Alex Symmonds, Neil Francis, Matt Towe, Ben Davies and Brad Voth. By late February the Friday session was becoming crowded so a second session began on Wednesday evenings. Within 4 months an average of 80 adults and children were playing ice hockey every week and new members are joining all the time.
In 2008 the Devils Community Foundation (DCF) was established and 'Learn to Play' was replaced with 'Play The Game' (PTG). The PTG programme is open to players over the age of 18. Under 18's have their own 'Future Devils' programme also operated by the DCF.
The Cardiff Demons are now a registered recreational hockey team with the EIHA. The team still trains within the Devils' PTG programme.
